February Check-In

On Love, Connection, and Getting Through Winter

Was it just me, or did January feel SUPER long? I swear I lived through four months of the year only to realize it was still January. But we made it  and now we’re in the shortest month of the year.

While brainstorming this month’s note, I stumbled on something interesting: according to Google, seasonal depression hits peak severity in February. Not exactly comforting but here’s the good news. Phil the Groundhog saw his shadow and emerged from hibernation. The TL;DR for me? Winter is almost over.

Still, I can feel the effects of it. I want to stay in, wrapped in a blanket, sleeping more than usual, craving carbs and sweets. Maybe that’s just me but honestly, I’m excited for February. There’s Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year for those who celebrate, and a subtle shift toward connection after a long, quiet winter stretch. So in that spirit, here are a few simple ways to take care of yourself this month.

Make plans (even small ones)

Having something to look forward to helps especially when it’s cold. Maybe it’s a casual catch-up over coffee or even planning a future trip. We all can start fantasizing about our European summer. You don’t have to book anything yet because sometimes just looking at summer plans is enough to lift your mood.

I saw this thing on TikTok where a group of full-blown adult girls go to a bar on a Sunday to just debrief in pajamas and bedazzle hair combs while debriefing. Surely, people can do that in the comforts of their own home but honestly, something about being cozy as a group activity in a public space is appealing. It’s like you’re bringing home outside. Might be worth trying.

Get some sunlight

The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., which unfortunately overlaps with most workdays. But if you can sneak outside for a short walk or pick up lunch, it makes a difference. If your office is in Nomad, I would recommend going for a walk in Madison Square Park. There’s plenty of sunlight there PLUS you get a side of dogs barking.

And if that’s not possible? Sunlight therapy is always an option. Lightboxes are easy to find, and while I haven’t personally tried one, if it works, it works.

Move (gently)

I know. This one’s a cliché and I know working out in this weather feels like a chore. But movement really does change everything. Even 30 minutes every other day can help regulate your circadian rhythm, boost endorphins, and improve your mood more than you expect.

You don’t need an intense routine, just something consistent enough to remind your body it’s still alive and capable. Better yet, New York is literally the place for trying out workouts. If you sign up for Classpass, you can get around 3-4 workout classes for free.

Personally, I live and breathe Solidcore with a side of Soulcycle but something that I thought was worth trying when I moved to New York was Northern Strong just because the whole workout is one-of-a-kind. They’re inspired by the Nordic lifestyle. Their “ski rowers” or whatever it’s called are literally patented. Think of the rowing machine but instead of rowing, you ski. I thought it was fun and I’m sure there’s plenty of other fun workouts out there that you’ll enjoy!

And because taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be complicated, we wanted to share a small treat. We have three more single-credit Othership gift cards available: a chance to warm up in a sauna or reset with an ice bath. If that sounds nice, just email me. First come, first served.

We’re also running a referral program: If a friend or coworker places an order with Avo after your referral, you’ll receive a $200 bonus. Whether that turns into a lightbox, a Hatch clock, or something else that supports your routine, consider it a little nudge toward feeling better this winter.

Signing off,
Isabel
