Things to do in New York this month.
May is officially the start of the fun outdoor season here in New York. Read our latest guide on the things to do in NYC this month.
Note: As New York slowly eases into normality, venue opening times and activities on offer are subject to very quick change. Please check ahead before you go.
Warmer weather, longer days and a fresh sense of (semi) normality - it must be May! There’s no shortage of activities to do in New York this month, especially for those who want to soak up as much sun and fresh air as possible. We’ve pulled together some of the unmissable events, festivals and activities to explore in NYC this month.
Visit Governors Island.
Governors Island is a lush oasis and has even been described as the “jewel of New York City”.
This seasonal spot reopened at the start of May, and now promises a calendar performing arts, organised runs, open orchards and live jazz festivals. You can even visit the island for a spot of glamping or to peruse artisanal markets!
Dance your heart out at Jazz Age Lawn Party.
One of the ‘must have’ events at Governors Island is the Jazz Age Lawn Party: a summer staple for anyone looking for a free-spirited dance in the great outdoors. The party venue is an ideal location to wave goodbye to the 21st century and lose yourself in the fun of the Prohibition-era.
Dress the part and get ready to dance the night (and day) away.
Celebrate Pride.
Whatever your sexuality, it’s time to celebrate Pride!
The official theme for Pride 2021 is ‘The Fight Continues’ and there are countless ways to show your support: from the LGBT Pride March, the Pride Rally, the Frontrunners Pride Run and much, much more.
Indulge in the Museum of the Moving Image.
It’s one of the city’s most dynamic institutions, and we are happy to say that it has officially reopened
Enjoy live exhibitions, drive-in screenings and community involvement opportunities across this stunningly versatile building. This month (among LOTS more), you can experience the museum’s “Behind the Screen” exhibit which examines every intricate step of the filmmaking process, with artifacts from more than 1,000 different productions, and 14 classic and playable video games, including Asteroids, Ms. Pac-Man and Space Invaders.
Wander the ‘Ghost Forest’ in Madison Park.
Check out this spooky installation at Madison Square Garden Maya Lin's Ghost Forest, a towering stand of forty-nine spectral cedar trees, is a powerful new public art work on view from now through November 14, 2021.
The exhibition aims to raise awareness for the ill effects of climate change and, in particular, the dying off of major tracts of forests.
Visit Little Island @Pier55.
Little Island is a public park that provides a one-of-a-kind relationship between nature and art—a break from urban life and a connection to spontaneity and joy.
It’s a place to listen and learn - perfect for family trips - and escape the hustle and bustle of NYC life. You’ll find a unique variety of plants, trees and flowers, all coming to create a blissful park oasis.
While you’re there, you can grab a snack and from June 14 you can even listen to a collection of talented local artists from every corner of the park.
Take a bike ride to Industrial City.
Longer days and warmer temperatures mean one thing - it’s time to get on your bike!
Why not take your bike (or rent one!) for a cycle right through to Industrial City? On the way you can stop at Albero del Gelato in Park Slope for a delicious sunshine treat, and of course pop into Avocaderia to pay us a visit!
