Learn to sail at Flushing Meadows 

Ever fancied learning how to sail? Here’s your chance!

The 1,255-acre Flushing Meadows Corona Park is now host to beginner’s sailing lessons, thanks to The American Small Craft Association. They’re reasonably priced and ideal for anyone who doesn’t quite have the confidence to venture out into the big blue.

From the park’s Meadow Lake, you’ll learn the fundamentals of basic sailing, including how to rig and steer the boat.

Go bouldering in Central Park

We all know Central Park for its beautiful open space, lushious spots to relax and winding paths full of joggers. But did you know that it is also a mecca for bouldering enthusiasts?

Bouldering - an offshoot of traditional rock climbing - requires no ropes but a lot of muscle strength. All you need is a mat and some chalk and it’s all yours. Central Park has three main venues for you to try out your climbing abilities: Cat Rock, Wave Rock and Rat Rock. Catch it on a sunny day and you’ll see it bursting with fellow boulderers.

Surfing and New York… Yep, it’s a thing!

Head over to Rockaway Beach in Queens and you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to surf schools. Whether you’re a total novice or a seasoned pro, this is a popular spot for catching waves and you can expect at least 60 guaranteed minutes of surfing time (if you do choose to take up a lesson!).

The Bronx River is New York’s only ‘true’ river. It is also the ultimate success story with regards environmental growth - in the past, it was - essentially - a bit of a mess. Now, it’s bursting with herons, fish and turtles, making it a popular destination for paddlers.

Van Cortlandt park is a great place to start - a gorgeous, expansive location to escape the monotonous cement pounding, taking you out into the woods to run while drinking in nature.

Grab your bike and take in the city on two wheels as you cycle through the idyllic Hudson River Greenway.

This picturesque path is free from cars, making it one of the top biking spots in the city. You’ll get perfect waterfront views and can even cycle past some of the original settlements of the city!
